Godot Inventory System

An inventory touches everything: item data, stacking rules, the UI and saving. This one keeps the data apart from the UI. You can keep the logic and restyle the window without breaking it.

Inspecting items, using a potion, dragging a sword to another slot, adding loot and stacking potions.

What is in it

  • One resource file per item, with a name, icon, description, stack limit, rarity, value and type.
  • Items stack up to their limit, and your code is told how many did not fit.
  • Drag and drop built on Godot's own GUI drag system.
  • Tooltips that open next to the mouse and stay on screen.
  • Right click uses an item. Consumables are used up.
  • Save and load to a plain dictionary.
  • The Inventory is a plain node with signals, so any UI can sit on top of it.

Quick start

Download the project from GitHub and unzip it. In the Godot Project Manager, click Import and pick the project.godot file inside the folder.

  1. Press F5.
  2. Left click an item to see its details, and right click a potion to use it.
  3. Drag items between slots. Drop potions on potions to stack them.
  4. Press 1 to add loot, S to save and L to load. I opens and closes the bag.

The README on GitHub explains how each part works and how to copy it into your own game.

Known limits

  • Equipment stats show in the tooltip, but nothing equips them. Connect item use to your own equipment code.
  • There is no stack splitting.
  • Saves store items by file path, so moving or renaming an item file breaks old saves.
  • The demo is a UI on a plain background, not a game scene.

Learn to build it

Copying a system works until you need to change it. These quests build it with you, one small step at a time. You write the GDScript in your browser and each step is checked before you move on.

Inventory System

Builds this inventory from the data model up: items, slots, the UI and using items.
